Hasta 137 cadáveres de lobos marinos han aparecido, solos o dispersos, en una playa de Baja California Sur, en México. Estaban hinchados, en avanzado de descomposición y, según han explicado los científicos que estuvieron en el lugar, probablemente murieron mar adentro y flotaron arrastrados por las corrientes del norte hasta este punto de la costa, concretamente la playa de San Lázaro.
A pesar de no contar todavía con los resultados de los análisis del laboratorio, la hipótesis principal que barajan los científicos es que esta muerte masiva se parece mucho a una intoxicación por marea roja, un fenómeno natural provocado por la proliferación de algas.
Todo comenzó el 3 de septiembre de 2020, cuando una bióloga recibió el aviso. Tanto ella como sus compañeros de la Red de Varamientos de Mamíferos Marinos, que intentan salvar a los todavía vivos, acudieron a la playa de San Lázaro para comprobar la veracidad de la alerta. Para su asombro, se encontraron con el varamiento y muerte masiva de hasta 137 ejemplares de lobos marinos.
Nunca habían visto nada semejante, en tal cantidad.
En las observaciones preliminares, ninguno de los biólogos observó que los cuerpos presentaran signos de marcas de redes, a pesar de ser una zona muy utilizada por los productores pesqueros del país, como tampoco había indicios de golpes o cortes provocados por embarcaciones. Pero, además de la ausencia de estas marcas, el número de cadáveres encontrados tampoco cuadra con la hipótesis.
Entre los lobos marinos muertos solamente había una hembra. El resto eran todos machos, de entre 5 y 9 años de edad, con un peso medio de unos 200 kilos y 2,4 metros de longitud.
Curiosamente, la teoría que más pesa entre los expertos es la intoxicación. Una toxina que podría haber afectado al sistema nervioso y gastrointestinal.
Los florecimientos de algas que generan este tipo de toxinas se conocen como mareas rojas. Precisamente, algo que se ha visto en mayores cantidades en los océanos últimamente, debido, por ejemplo, al aumento de la temperatura del mar. De ser consumidas por los humanos pueden provocar diarreas, vómitos, amnesia y hasta la muerte.
Aunque, en ocasiones, en estas circunstancias, las autoridades suelen decretar una veda sobre el consumo de cierto tipo de moluscos o pescado para evitar incidentes, en esta ocasión, han apostado por la cautela.
No obstante, se han trasladado muestras de los cadáveres de los lobos marinos a los laboratorios centrales con el fin de llevar a cabo las pruebas pertinentes para confirmar o descartar esta hipótesis.
