En el desierto de Rub-al-Jali o al Rab al Khali, en la frontera entre Arabia Saudí y Omán, se ha formado un precioso lago después de que el huracán Shaheen descargara lluvias intensas y produjera riadas en los valles.
Se trata de un evento inusual y sorprendente, que no había sucedido em cerca de 20 años. Este mismo fenómeno de formación de un lago tuvo lugar hace unos 3 años tras el paso del ciclón Mekunu.
El desierto de Rub-al-Jali es uno de los desiertos de arena más grandes del mundo y forma parte del más amplio desierto de Arabia. Las lluvias no suelen supercar los 35 mm al año y las temperaturas suelen oscilar entre los 50ºC.
Suele incluir dunas de diferentes alturas, algunas de las cuales llegan a los 250 metros de altura.
Centinel-2, que utiliza el espectro infrarrojo para detectar cambios sutiles en la vegetación, también puede detectar cambios en la composición mineral, allí donde apenas hay vegetación.
Lo destacado es la aparición de este lago en un desierto donde no suele llover, y mucho menos encontrarse agua.
