Las carreteras y autovías de Australia Occidental han quedado destruidas en lo que se ha calificado como unas inundaciones que solo suceden una vez en una década. A fecha de hoy, se ha activado una alerta por clima extremo y lluvias torrenciales en el este de Kimberly, ya que el frente de bajas presiones se está desplazando hacia el sur del estado.
Se prevé que se tardarán semanas en poder reparar los daños provocados por estas inundaciones en la red de carreteras.
El frente tropical ha descargado hasta 176 mm (6,9 pulgadas) de lluvias en Carnarvon, en un periodo de 24 horas, el 5 de febrero.
Según los Servicios de Emergencias e Incendios del Departamento de WA, el río Gascoyne se encontraba en 6,98 metros (22,9 pies) el viernes. El sábado, había alcanzado los 7,06 metros (23,1 pies), lo que es bastante por encima de su caudal de inundación.
Docenas de personas han tenido que ser rescatadas de las inundaciones en la zona de Gascoyne, algunas de ellas incluso en helicóptero. Además, DFES ha informado que se han llevado a cabo evacuaciones.
Se recuerda a los conductores que no se adentren en zonas inundadas o acordonadas y que se mantengan alejados de ríos y arroyos.
