Hoy, 13 de abril de 2021, a las 22:05 horas (UTC), tendrá lugar la máxima aproximación a nuestro planeta del asteroide 2021 GC8. Descubierto recientemente por el Kitt Peak-Bok, en Arizona, el pasado 11 de abril, este asteroide se acercará a la Tierra a 0,57 distancias lunares, lo que equivale a 218.410 kilómetros, es decir, 135.715 millas. Se calcula que a una velocidad de unos 6,84 kilómetros por segundo.
Se trata del noveno asteroide que hará su sobrevuelo a la Tierra este mes de abril y el número cuarenta y dos en lo que va de año. En el mes de abril de 2020, un total de 13 asteroides hicieron su aproximación cercana a la Tierra.
Se calcula que este objeto espacial mantiene un diámetro de unos 2,2 y 5 metros (de 7,2 a 16,4 pies) y que pertenece al grupo de asteroides Apollo.
