Desde que empezó la erupción del Fagradalsfjall, el 19 de marzo de 2021, se han abierto nuevas fisuras en varias ocasiones. Sin embargo, la actividad en el volcán ha cambiado el 2 de mayo, produciendo fuentes de lava enormes: considerada como la más grande desde que empezó su erupción.
Se ha visto cómo las fuentes de lava han alcanzado unos 300 metros (985 pies) sobre el terreno, durante entre 3 a 10 minutos.
La Oficina de Meteorología de Islandia ha confirmado que se han producido cambios considerables en la actividad volcánica sobre las 01:00 horas (hora local), del 2 de mayo de 2021.
No está claro lo que esta provocando estos cambios en la actividad volcánica, pero la Oficina no descarta que pueda haber cambios en el flujo de magma, la composición química del magma/gas o que se hayan registrado cambios en el sistema de alimentación del volcán.
En vista de este cambio en la actividad del volcán, se está reevaluando el área de peligro en la zona de erupción.
