Las autoridades de los Países Bajos han activado una alerta roja, válida en todo el país, tras verse afectados por la primera tormenta de nieve importante en más de una década. Se trata de la primera tormenta de invierno en mucho tiempo, ya que la última fue en el enero de 2010.
Como consecuencia de estas condiciones meteorológicas adversas, los Países Bajos se han visto obligados a cancelar decenas de vuelos o en retrasarlos, en el aeropuerto de Schiphol, en Ámsterdam, al mismo tiempo que el aeropuerto de Eindhoven ha cancelado todos sus vuelos.
En cuanto al servicio ferroviario, este permanece cancelado debido a la tormenta y los tranvías en Ámsterdam están parados después de que uno descarrilara por la nieve.
Se ha aconsejado a los conductores que eviten los desplazamientos, después de que aproximadamente 80 vehículos se salieran de las carreteras por culpa de la nieve.
Se calcula que se han acumulado entre 5 y 10 centímetros (de 2 a 4 pulgadas) de nieve en el país, aunque algunas zonas han llegado a acumular hasta 30 centímetros.
La nevada ha sido tan intensa, que las autoridades se han visto obligadas a cancelar unos días las vacunaciones para el coronavirus.
Los cuatro partidos de fútbol del domingo tuvieron que ser cancelados por la nieve.
La tormenta Darcy, que también ha provocado un acusado descenso de las temperaturas en el país vecino, Alemania, ha generado vientos de hasta 90 kilómetros por hora (55 millas), mientras los termómetros marcan 5ºC (23ºF).
En Alemania también tuvieron que cancelar los partidos de fútbol este domingo por la nieve. Las nevadas han interrumpido el servicio ferroviario, incluido el que circula habitualmente entre ciudades como Hamburgo y Hanover.
Se calcula que el espesor de la nieve acumulada ha alcanzado los 30 centímetros, provocando cientos de accidentes.
Algunos vehículos han quedado atrapados bajo la nieve y sus dueños han tenido que sacarlos con palas.
Sin embargo, todavía no ha terminado esta situación, ya que las previsiones meteorológicas apuntan a que seguirá nevando, incluso de forma intensa, especialmente en el norte de Alemania. El pronóstico es que podrían acumularse otros 40 centímetros de nieve.
Con respecto a Bélgica, el Servicio de Meteorología ha informado que ya está nevando pero que se prevé un importante descenso en las temperaturas. En algunas zonas esperan que el termómetro pueda llegar a los -10ºC, por lo que es muy probable que pueda acumularse más nieve en las próximas horas.
En el Reino Unido se han activado todo tipo de alertas por nieve y temperaturas bajas. Se prevé que las nevadas interrumpan el tráfico y provoquen apagones eléctricos.
La Oficina de Meteorología ha explicado que se trata de un episodio “bastante frío”, consecuencia de los vientos del este procedentes de Ucrania y del Mar Negro. Algunas zonas del país mantienen activas alertas amarillas por nieve y hielo, algunas válidas hasta el miércoles. En cuanto a las temperaturas, se espera que estén por debajo de los cero grados centígrados.
En las advertencias de la Oficina, se informa que se prevén acumulaciones de 5 a 10 centímetros de nieve en amplias zonas, de 15 a 20 centímetros en algunos lugares en concreto y de forma menos probable entre 25 y 30 centímetros, en localizaciones muy puntuales.
Además de la nieve, se advierte acerca de las fuertes rachas de vientos que se pueden registrar, lo que podría dar lugar a ventisca en muchas regiones.
La policía de Suffolk, Essex y Norfolk han advertido este lunes a los conductores para que no circulen por las carreteras, debido a que se encuentran intransitables. Algunos servicios de trenes han tenido que ser cancelados. Y, al parecer, las condiciones en las carreteras de Suffolk están empeorando.
El Reino Unido también se ha visto obligado a cerrar algunos centros de vacunaciones del coronavirus, debido a estas condiciones climáticas tan adversas.
