Texas está viviendo unas condiciones extremas insólitas. Nunca habían visto tan frío y durante tanto tiempo. Nadie estaba preparado para algo así. De hecho, es importante tener en cuenta que las condiciones climáticas actuales que están viviendo son muy inusuales para Texas. Muchas casas no están construidas para soportar temperaturas tan bajas. Tampoco las tuberías. La infraestructura municipal no estaba preparada para afrontar un evento tan frío. Así que, no es de extrañar, que, en algunos sitios, la situación sea catastrófica. No solo llevan días sin suministro eléctrico, sino que tampoco disponen de agua. Muchos supermercados se han quedado sin productos y no esperan recibirlos en los próximos días. Las carreteras están intransitables y algunas casas parecen estar a la intemperie porque se ha formado hielo en su interior, del frío que hace.
Los sistemas de suministro de agua en Texas están dañados y pierden agua, por lo que se ha advertido a los residentes que deben consumir agua embotellada o hervirla. Estos daños se han producido porque las tuberías se han congelado. Y, como consecuencia de ello, aproximadamente los 13 millones de habitantes del estado, según el director ejecutivo de la Comisión de Calidad Medioambiental de Texas, han sido advertidos que deben hervir el agua. Es decir, que no deben consumir agua del grifo ni agua que no esté bien purificada. En total, se calcula que unos 700 sistemas de agua se han visto afectados por esta situación.
Aunque la previsión es que, la semana próxima, las temperaturas sean más cálidas, el estado todavía afronta temperaturas mínimas esta misma noche del sábado.
25 millones de personas se encuentran bajo una alerta por temperaturas gélidas en algunas zonas de Texas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Luisiana y Arkansas.
Los residentes de Texas que no se prepararon para una emergencia, ahora no disponen de agua potable. Y ya sabemos que, una de las prioridades si quieres sobrevivir es beber agua. Así que, sin otros recursos, están hirviendo nieve para tener agua e incluso están quemando enseres de sus casas para poder calentarse.
Algunos servicios de emergencia, incluidos hospitales como el Houston Methodist Baytown, han estado funcionando sin agua y han tenido que usar su creatividad mental para recoger agua de lluvia y hervirla.
En momentos de catástrofe, si no te habías preparado, solo te queda pensar y hacer lo que esté en tu mano para superar la situación. Muchos residentes en Texas, están viviendo una experiencia única, que ha puesto en evidencia la falta de preparación y puesto en peligro a millones de personas.
Los daños provocados por el hielo y las tuberías congeladas en negocios y en casas son tan numerosos, que el mismo gobernador ha anunciado que solicitará la declaración de desastre del gobierno regional.
¿Qué podemos aprender de esta experiencia?
Que las catástrofes pueden acontecer en cualquier momento y en lugares donde no son comunes este tipo de emergencias.
Que debemos prepararnos para una emergencia, sí o sí.
