Desde ayer, los científicos han ido modificando la hora prevista para la llegada de la lava al mar. Todo ello debido a que se ha ido desplazando cada vez a menor velocidad, retrasando su llegada. Ahora avanza a unos 120 metros por hora, pero no por ir más lenta está siendo menos destructiva.
Después de forzar la evacuación de más de 5.500 personas, los vecinos de Todoque también han tenido que recoger rápidamente algunas pertenencias y huir. Mientras soportan la caída de una lluvia de cenizas volcánicas, no han tenido otra alternativa que marcharse para acudir a un lugar seguro porque la lava ha llegado a su localidad. Solo han tenido aproximadamente 1 hora para recoger y hacer las maletas.
La preocupación se centra ahora en la posible apertura de nuevas bocas y su llegada al mar, ya que al entrar en contacto con agua generará gases extremadamente peligrosos. Según los expertos, se formará una explosión de vapores de agua que crearán una nube blanca densa. Esta pluma, causada por el flujo de lava, albergará roca que también generará reacciones químicas, principalmente de cloro que puede irritar la piel, ojos y sistema respiratorio.
Los peligros del contacto de la lava con el agua del mar
Según el Servicio Geológico de los Estados Unidos, cuando lava entra en contacto con el agua del océano existen cuatro peligros principales:
El colapso repentino de tierra y de cualquier colina cercana al océano.
Explosiones provocadas por el colapso.
Olas de agua muy caliente que llegan a la costa.
Pluma de vapores con lluvia de cloro (lluvia ácida) y partículas de cenizas volcánicas.
No obstante, destacar que la interacción del agua del mar con la lava del volcán no siempre es destructiva, como sucedió durante la erupción del volcán submarino frente a la isla de El Hierro, en las Islas Canarias en el año 2011. No obstante, hay que tomar precauciones y ser muy cautos, porque no se sabe con certeza cuáles serán las consecuencias en esta ocasión.
Según ha explicado el director técnico del Plan de Emergencias Volcánicas de Canarias (Pevolca), la lava discurre por dos lenguas, una de las cuales, la situada al sudoeste, en Las Manchas, tiene un movimiento mínimo de apenas 2 metros por hora. La otra es la que avanza, lentamente, pero sin descanso, ladera abajo. Es la que ha llegado a Todoque, alimentada además por una nueva boca que se abrió anoche y que obligó a la evacuación de los habitantes de Tacande, en El Paso. Esta lava es más fluida y tiene menos dificultades para avanzar.
Los cálculos preliminares muestran que el volcán contiene entre 17 y 20 millones de metros cúbicos de magma. Es decir, menos de la mitad de los 43 millones que lanzó Teneguía cuando entró en erupción en el año 1971. Claro que, en esta ocasión, los datos son preliminares y están sujetos a revisión.
Mientras tanto, el enjambre sísmico que comenzó hace unas dos semanas, y que no terminó tras la erupción del volcán en La Palma, acumula más de 26.000 terremotos, según el Instituto Vulcanológico de Canarias (Involcan), siendo el más potente el de 4,2 grados que tuvo lugar el domingo.
No se descartan nuevos puntos de emisión de lava
De hecho, la sismicidad superficial importante que está teniendo lugar es la que ha propiciado que el director de Involcan, Nemesio Pérez, haya explicado este martes que no descarta que aparezcan en la zona nuevos puntos de emisión de la lava, concretamente nuevas bocas eruptivas, pero no fisuras.
